CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns said two weeks ago that they were going to target Odell Beckham Jr. more.
And that they have.
Four days after targeting Beckham a season-high 12 times in the Browns’ 19-16 win over the Buffalo Bills, Baker Mayfield found his 3-time Pro Bowl receiver for a 42-yard gain on Cleveland’s third offensive play of its Thursday Night Football matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although the play was initially ruled a touchdown, it was overturned following a replay review.
But while Beckham was ruled short of the end zone, it didn’t take long for the Browns to put six points on the board, with Mayfield sneaking it in on the very next play.
Mayfield’s rushing touchdown gave the Browns an early 7-0 lead against Pittsburgh, which entered Thursday laying claim to a 5-4 record and occupying the AFC’s second Wild Card spot. At 3-6, Cleveland is currently two games back of the Steelers and four games back of the Baltimore Ravens (7-2) in the AFC North.
