BEREA, Ohio — Few players in the NFL can match the story of Browns punter Jamie Gillan.
From his days growing up as an “army brat” from Inverness in northern Scotland, to the challenges of playing rugby, to becoming one of the highlights so far for the Cleveland Browns in 2019, Gillan has quite a tale to tell.
He was an undrafted free agent after playing college football for Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Browns took a flyer on the man who would become known as “The Scottish Hammer,” but the odds of him beating out veteran Britton Colquitt in training camp seemed long.
An impressive preseason that included a 74-yard punt against the Indianapolis Colts led to Gillan winning the team’s starting job. He followed that up by being named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week in the Browns’ Week 2 win over the Jets. Despite the fact that Cleveland posted its largest margin of victory since the 2004 season, Gillan totaled six punts for 231 yards, with five of his punts landing inside the 20-yard line.

Over the course of the game, the Jets returned just one of Gillan’s punts for five yards and averaged a starting field position at the 18-yard line.
For the season, “The Scottish Hammer” ranks 2nd in the NFL in punting net average and has put 16 of his punts inside the 20-yard line.
