The GO! morning show team dives into the Browns on Monday Night Football and the New York Times report saying the Cleveland Indians are dropping the name “Indians.”
CLEVELAND — It’s a sports themed On the GO! aftershow as the GO! morning team delves into the New York Times report that the Cleveland Indians will drop “Indians” from their team name due to critics considering the name racist.
“This is a very passionate city and baseball and sports … is something that’s super personal,” 3News reporter Austin Love said. “Change is never easy. It’s tough but I think the Indians are hearing the backlash and hearing the noise and hearing what’s taking place in society today and they’re trying to be mindful of that.”
As news developed concerning a potential name change, people took to our WKYC social media accounts expressing their perspective.
“I will always call the team Cleveland Indians and wear my Chief Wahoo hat,” wrote Facebook user Doug Heath during the live chat.
Meantime, Karen Balmer wrote on an earlier post “those of us who are not Native American have no right to be indignant over this. The players, Tito and owners are good with the change. It’s time for everyone else to stand with them.”
A WKYC Twitter poll, which asked for opinions on a new nickname for the team has the “Spiders” winning out over names like “Buckeyes” and “CLE Baseball Club.”
Morning show anchor Maureen Kyle added her 5-year-old daughter offered up the name: “The Winners.”
And speaking of winners, the 9-3 Browns are hoping to be winners tonight on Monday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens, who sit in the third spot of the AFC North behind the Browns and Steelers with a record of 7-5.
Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. on NBC.
The weather has made headlines the past few home games due to inclement playing conditions, but meteorologist Hollie Strano says we’re all good for tonight’s game.
“Our team knows how to play in the elements but there’s not going to be, outside of the weather being chilly, any element to worry about this evening.” Strano said.
She’s forecasting temperatures in the 30s with partly to mostly cloudy skies during the game.
