Mike Bloomgren was recently fired as the head coach at Rice after going 24-52 in seven seasons.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns waisted little time in filling their vacancy at offensive line coach by hiring former Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren to the position.

Bloomgreen spend the last seven NCAA seasons with the Owls amassing a 24-52 record.

He takes over a unit that took a dramatic step back in performance last season as the unit transitioned in leadership from Bill Callahan to Andy Dickerson.

Along with a combination of poor QB play, injuries and poor play, the unit helped play a part in one of the worst years of offensive output in team history.

The Browns ranked 24th in pressure rate and 27th in sack rate in the 20224-25 season.

This isn’t Bloomgren’s first rodeo when it comes to the NFL. He spent four seasons from 2007 through 2010 with the New York Jets, climbing as high as assistant offensive coordinator in his final year with the team.

If the Browns are clamoring for a return to the Bill Callahan style of coaching, they just might get it with Bloomgren. During his tenure with the Jets, Bloomgren worked under Callahan as his assistant.
